Underworld, Athens a new mix CD.
Underworld will release the first in a two-part compilation series next month entitled, Athens after the name of Hyde's painting that adorns the sleeve—is actually credited to Underworld vs The Misterons, which suggests that regular instrumentalist Darren Price and Junior Boys Own co-founder Steven Hall had a hand in the project. You might be surprised at what you hear. Athens departs from the regular house and techno compilation.
"The overall mood is jazz and improvisation,"they explain. "There is very little playing in a lot of people's records in the dance and DJ world these days, but one thing Underworld have always liked is musicianship. It doesn't stop us loving machine music and house music and everything that goes with it, but the idea with this album was to highlight records we liked that we thought had great live playing on them."
The result is a diverse selection of groove-based tracks that range from the psychedelic blues to jazzy techno and beyond.
!K7 will release Underworld, Athens on November 23rd, 2009. |

Pioneer CDJ-2000.
The new offering from the defacto Pro DJ CD player Pioneer has got some great features. Among our favorites is the ability to use many different media formats for playback on different devices (MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF audio files on CD, DVD, SD Card, USB and external drives) and the ability to link the devices. Linking the devises enables you to use the same media library accoss upto 4 CDJ-2000's. For instance you could plug a USB drive in one CDJ, press the Link button on another CDJ-2000 and instantly access music from the same drive, possibly eliminating over half your DVD's and CD's. The Needle Search function helps DJs instantaneously get to a specific part of a song with a simple touch of the Needle Search pad. Found directly below the CDJ-2000's high resolution LCD panel, the touchpad lets the DJ "place the needle" and jump quickly to a specific part of a music track. The LCD panel features a large 6.1-inch full-color 480 x 234 LCD panel for displaying song titles and jacket art as well as detailed track information. We can't wait to get our hands on them for a further review. Pioneer PRO DJ gear continues to be leagues beyond it's competition and we expect this new hardware to become a staple behind the booth soon!
Check out this great video demo after the jump. |

rip! A Remix Manifesto.
RiP! A Remix Manifesto, this new documentary film from Brett Gaylor talks about the culture of remixing music and the copyright control, piracy, and fair use issues that go along with it. The film shows us the timely controversy with mashing up music and the wall between users and producers. It's focus is the controversy surrounding the increasingly popular sample-based musical artist Girl Talk and his issues with the world of piracy.
Gaylor’s film goes above and beyond the bounds of most traditional documentaries and fully engages in the issue at hand: he has made his film “open source” and available online for anyone to “remix” themselves. Visit opensourcecinema.org for more info.
Being officially backed up by the Canadian government, you will be astounded by what you see and what is openly discussed in this picture. The concern on matter of copyright in the United States (in particular), dates back at least 200 years and the whole idea of copyright has been evolving throughout the 20th century. While some concentrate on reinventing the wheel (with and, much more often, without success) many draw inspiration from artists of the past and instead of inventing new pieces, rearrange the existing ones to create a mosaic of art novelty. A typical example of a contemporary artist, who does that, is Gregg Gillis from Girl Talk. |

Renaissance Master. Dave Seaman.
Dave Seaman is letting go once again with his 5th Renaissance 's Master series mix. His most recent mix CD, however, was This Is Audio Therapy Vol. 2, a compilation that took in some of the latest and greatest from his own label. Seaman's Renaissance effort, per usual, will span tracks from a variety of labels, as well as including exclusive edits, additional production and FX. The mix this time around has certainly taken it's toll on Dave.
He write's on his blog,
So, after several painstaking weeks, the endurance test that was the making of my new mix CD is finally over. Yes, my 26th compilation, Renaissance Masters Series Volume 14 is finished and due for release on September 28th but to be honest, I think it may well be my last. It's such a time consuming process these days that's dogged by mountains of red tape, not to mention the fact that trying to make an album four months in advance that still feels 'new' when it's released is increasingly difficult. Consequently, the allure of just doing regular free podcasts grows ever more appealing. But we shall see. For now, I'm just enjoying the fact that this one is done and I'm very happy and proud of the final result. I hope you enjoy it too."
As Seaman puts it:
There's so much additional production and 'nipping and tucking' editing going on it's difficult to highlight it all! We've credited certain parts where the results are obvious (the UNKLE acapella over a heavily chopped-up Andre Winter track and the additional drums, bass and female vocal on Jon Hopkins for example), but the whole album almost became like one long track to be honest, such was the care and attention that went into it. I hope it shines through..."
As he mentions, Andre Winter, Jon Hopkins and UNKLE all make appearances over the course of the two discs, with other notable productions coming from the likes of Four Tet, Ben Watt, Moby, Agoria, Radio Slave, Nic Fanciulli and many others.
Tracklist after the jump. Renaissance will release Dave Seaman's Renaissance: The Masters Series - Dave Seaman on September 28, 2009. |

Minus Tour DVD.
Minus have revealed details of an upcoming DVD documentary charting the label's 2008 world tour under the banner of their improvisational Contakt show. As we're sure you're all aware by now, Richie Hawtin and his M_nus colleagues took to the road last year in celebration of the imprint's tenth year of service with their collaborative, laptop-based Contakt project. Now the label are offering a chance to scratch the surface of the tour with a "fly-on-the-wall" look at what transpired during the those nine performances. Co-directed by Ali Demirel and Richie Hawtin, the film is said to give a, "warts 'n' all appraisal of the highs, lows, triumphs and near catastrophes that accompanied the tour," and will take in everything from the venue issues that plagued the initial show in Detroit, through to Amsterdam's The Sand during ADE and the finale at Tokyo's Makuhari Messe.
Minus is set to release the Contakt DVD in Autumn/Winter 2009.

Kraftwerk 12345678.
Kraftwerk will undergo the deluxe reissue treatment this fall. The legendary electronic group which arguably started it all is set to put out 12345678: The Catalogue via Moby's Mute in October. You can grab the set in a variety of different ways. Either as individual CDs, individual LPs, a CD box set or as digital downloads. Each seem to have a variety of sweeteners, with the individual CDs containing newly expanded artwork, the box set coming with "mini-vinyl" card wallet packaging or the vinyl LPs giving you "large format booklets." Either way, the possibility of getting remastered versions of classic Kraftwerk albums like Autobahn, Radio-Activity, Trans Europe Express, The Man Machine, Computer World, Techno Pop, The Mix and Tour De France is good enough for us, although as diehard fans we were heartened by the rumor that the group also intends to reissue their first three albums as well, sometime after the release of Catalogue.
Look for the Kraftwerk 12345678: The Catalogue release on Mute in October.

HARD Summer Festival Cancelled.
The HARD Summer Music Festival was canceled Saturday night around 11:30pm after the fire Marshall and Ingelewood police closed down the event at the Forum due to security and safety issues. Apparently the venue was oversold, and under-staffed, leaving hundreds, possibly thousands left off the dance floor and up on the upper seating areas.
When partygoers were ordered to clear the stairways and make their way back up to the seating areas many began jumping over the balcony to the floor below. Promoters asked many times for partyers to chill-out, clear the stairways and sit down but they weren't going to listen. Event Staff was overwhelmed. The Inglewood police then needed to end the event before the crowd got more out of control.
The decision was made about an hour before the official announcement allowing Inglewood riot police to get ready inside and out of the venue should there be any violent reaction by the angry attendees. Only Busy P and Crystal Castles got a chance to perform while the confused crowd waited for Chromeo to come on.
The Fire Marshall then together with the Inglewood police decided that the crowd would be to hard to control once the music started again.
The promoters wrote on their website hardfest.com,
"We were required to shut down Hard Summer at The Forum last night by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. They declared the event a "hazard" after seeing concertgoers jumping from the balcony to the floor, along with numerous other potentially dangerous activities. The Inglewood Police Department backed the decision of the Fire Department and assisted in the clearance of the venue. While we, the promoters, worked with the authorities to consider other options to continue the concert, ultimately they made the decision based on the safety of the concertgoers. We are happy to report that there were no major injuries. We are offering refunds to all concertgoers."

Daft Punk Score Tron Legacy.
Reports are suggesting that Daft Punk have almost completed the soundtrack to the upcoming Tron Legacy movie. Back in March we reported that Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo had been signed to write and produce the film's soundtrack, but nothing else had surfaced about the project until last week's Comic-Con event in San Diego. A panel discussion was held during which it was revealed that the duo had already recorded 24 tracks for the soundtrack.
The groundbreaking 1982 animation hit was originally scored by electronic music icon Wendy Carlos. At Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego, director Joseph Kasinski revealed, “There would definitely be Daft Punk Tron-themed events on the horizon,” meaning: a Daft Punk tour supporting Tron 2. Awesome!
Check out the video below which features some footage of the Tron Legacy attraction at the convention, including a track which may be one of Daft Punk's new creations, although this is yet to be confirmed.
Tron 2: Legacy isn’t due for release until 2011, but to hold you over we have included the trailer below as well. It speaks for itself. |
