WMC 2010

DJ Hero.

DJ Hero hs been released. Like Guitar Hero before it, DJ Hero challenges you to “master” a virtual instrument, this time it's the turntable. Also like Guitar Hero, it features an easy to pick up but difficult to master type of gameplay. DJ Hero’s accessibility should appeal to game enthusiasts and would-be DJ's to plain old music fans. Featuring 93 original mixes and 102 total songs at launch in genres from dance, to hip-hop to rock and R&B. The basic edition of the game costs $120 including the turntable controller. A special Renegade Edition comes with a 2-CD set featuring many of his greatest hits on one disc and some of Eminem’s on the other (as well as a stand and carrying case). The Renegade Edition will be $200.

Still, if you’re a music fan eager to take a stab at DJ technique standards like scratching, crossfading, sampling, and applying effects, it’s cheaper than picking up a pair of Technics 1200 and building a record collection. The title is available now for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2, and Nintendo Wii.

Underworld to Release Athens, New Mix CD Part 1

News
Tuesday, 20 October 2009
Underworld Athens

Underworld, Athens a new mix CD.

Underworld will release the first in a two-part compilation series next month entitled, Athens after the name of Hyde's painting that adorns the sleeve—is actually credited to Underworld vs The Misterons, which suggests that regular instrumentalist Darren Price and Junior Boys Own co-founder Steven Hall had a hand in the project. You might be surprised at what you hear. Athens departs from the regular house and techno compilation.

"The overall mood is jazz and improvisation,"they explain. "There is very little playing in a lot of people's records in the dance and DJ world these days, but one thing Underworld have always liked is musicianship. It doesn't stop us loving machine music and house music and everything that goes with it, but the idea with this album was to highlight records we liked that we thought had great live playing on them."

The result is a diverse selection of groove-based tracks that range from the psychedelic blues to jazzy techno and beyond.

!K7 will release Underworld, Athens on November 23rd, 2009.

Introducing the Pioneer CDJ-2000

News

Pioneer CDJ-2000

Pioneer CDJ-2000.

The new offering from the defacto Pro DJ CD player Pioneer has got some great features. Among our favorites is the ability to use many different media formats for playback on different devices (MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF audio files on CD, DVD, SD Card, USB and external drives) and the ability to link the devices. Linking the devises enables you to use the same media library accoss upto 4 CDJ-2000's. For instance you could plug a USB drive in one CDJ, press the Link button on another CDJ-2000 and instantly access music from the same drive, possibly eliminating over half your DVD's and CD's. The Needle Search function helps DJs instantaneously get to a specific part of a song with a simple touch of the Needle Search pad. Found directly below the CDJ-2000's high resolution LCD panel, the touchpad lets the DJ "place the needle" and jump quickly to a specific part of a music track. The LCD panel features a large 6.1-inch full-color 480 x 234 LCD panel for displaying song titles and jacket art as well as detailed track information. We can't wait to get our hands on them for a further review. Pioneer PRO DJ gear continues to be leagues beyond it's competition and we expect this new hardware to become a staple behind the booth soon!

Check out this great video demo after the jump.

RiP! A Remix Manifesto with Girl Talk and the Issue of Music Piracy

RIP A Remix Manifesto Girl Talk

rip! A Remix Manifesto.

RiP! A Remix Manifesto, this new documentary film from Brett Gaylor talks about the culture of remixing music and the copyright control, piracy, and fair use issues that go along with it. The film shows us the timely controversy with mashing up music and the wall between users and producers. It's focus is the controversy surrounding the increasingly popular sample-based musical artist Girl Talk and his issues with the world of piracy.

Gaylor’s film goes above and beyond the bounds of most traditional documentaries and fully engages in the issue at hand: he has made his film “open source” and available online for anyone to “remix” themselves. Visit opensourcecinema.org for more info.

Being officially backed up by the Canadian government, you will be astounded by what you see and what is openly discussed in this picture. The concern on matter of copyright in the United States (in particular), dates back at least 200 years and the whole idea of copyright has been evolving throughout the 20th century. While some concentrate on reinventing the wheel (with and, much more often, without success) many draw inspiration from artists of the past and instead of inventing new pieces, rearrange the existing ones to create a mosaic of art novelty. A typical example of a contemporary artist, who does that, is Gregg Gillis from Girl Talk.

Dave Seaman Renaissance Masters Series 14

Dave Seaman Masters Series

Renaissance Master. Dave Seaman.

Dave Seaman is letting go once again with his 5th Renaissance 's Master series mix. His most recent mix CD, however, was This Is Audio Therapy Vol. 2, a compilation that took in some of the latest and greatest from his own label. Seaman's Renaissance effort, per usual, will span tracks from a variety of labels, as well as including exclusive edits, additional production and FX. The mix this time around has certainly taken it's toll on Dave.

He write's on his blog,

So, after several painstaking weeks, the endurance test that was the making of my new mix CD is finally over. Yes, my 26th compilation, Renaissance Masters Series Volume 14 is finished and due for release on September 28th but to be honest, I think it may well be my last. It's such a time consuming process these days that's dogged by mountains of red tape, not to mention the fact that trying to make an album four months in advance that still feels 'new' when it's released is increasingly difficult. Consequently, the allure of just doing regular free podcasts grows ever more appealing. But we shall see. For now, I'm just enjoying the fact that this one is done and I'm very happy and proud of the final result. I hope you enjoy it too."

As Seaman puts it:

There's so much additional production and 'nipping and tucking' editing going on it's difficult to highlight it all! We've credited certain parts where the results are obvious (the UNKLE acapella over a heavily chopped-up Andre Winter track and the additional drums, bass and female vocal on Jon Hopkins for example), but the whole album almost became like one long track to be honest, such was the care and attention that went into it. I hope it shines through..."

As he mentions, Andre Winter, Jon Hopkins and UNKLE all make appearances over the course of the two discs, with other notable productions coming from the likes of Four Tet, Ben Watt, Moby, Agoria, Radio Slave, Nic Fanciulli and many others.

Tracklist after the jump. Renaissance will release Dave Seaman's Renaissance: The Masters Series - Dave Seaman on September 28, 2009.
