 Erol Alkan is #1
In a week that’s seen the DJ Mag Top 100 announced for another year – and, truth be told quite a few out there yawn at the predictability of the final outcome… once again! – British website datatransmission.co.uk have revealed the results for their inaugural ‘Top 40 DJ Poll’, with legendary tastemaker Erol Alkan coming up trumps.
The poll received over 30,000 votes, and its point of difference over the DJ Mag Top 100 was that it restricted input to UK clubbers only. Aside from Erol (and some dudes called Riley & Durrant. Anyone, Beuller? Bueller?) the top 10 was filled with the usual trance and progressive house suspects, but Alkan as #1 is an interesting outcome nonetheless. He didn’t even manage to crack the top 100 for DJ Mag, in fact he was #146 to be exact!
“Erol Alkan is a lynchpin in the electro scene that unites huge names like Justice, Soulwax and Digitalism, whose sound is undoubtedly one of the most popular globally in 2008,” proclaimed datatransmission.co.uk. “[He unites] both underground and more mainstream audiences with the dynamic crossover sounds that mixes pop and indie with gritty electro and techno to devastating effect.”
That’s all well and good of course, but it only has us begging to ask the question “EROL: WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TOUR?” all the louder. Maybe in 2009?
