Steve Bug Mixes Fabric37

Innovator, minimal dance connoisseur, tech house master - though he's been given many prestigious titles, if there's one quality that can be best attributed to Steve Bug, it would be modesty. It's a trait that has followed him throughout his illustrious career, from his early days as a child building guitars out of cardboard, to his early lessons in percussion at school ( "In school, I was always forced to play percussion - my teachers wouldn't give me the flute or any other instrument - I didn't even get the full kit - just the drum sticks and maybe a triangle!"), to his beginnings as a mixtape DJ ("I'd never really thought of playing in clubs; I was only really recording tapes for myself"), to his first productions ("The first few productions set my course - Tobias really liked them and wanted to put them out. I was a bit unsure as, like the mixtapes from years ago, they were more for me, not to impress others.").

Despite the fact that he's now largely regarded as one of the founding fathers of minimal - creating his "Da Minimal Funk" compilation over 10 years ago - and one of the most sought-after 4/4 DJs booked today, Bug remains truly humble when reflecting on the majestic rise from his beginnings as a dancefloor-dwelling clubber in Bremen, Germany to ruling his renowned Dessous/Poker Flat empire in Berlin.

Dj Dan Speaks out and Clears His Name in DJ Mag Top 100 Poll

Wednesday, 31 October 2007
DJ Dan Clears His Name in DJ Mag Top 100 Poll

As revealed last issue in DJMag they discovered voting irregularities in this year’s Top 100 DJs poll. The biggest DJs at the center of the controversy were cali favorites Christopher Lawrence and DJ Dan. Both shared the same marketing manager. As a result of the irregularities, DJmag removed both DJs from this year’s Top 100 poll.

Since then, DJmag has been in regular contact with both DJs and accept that they were not directly involved. As the Top 100 DJs issue 2007 went to press, DJmag publisher James Robertson said: “DJmag has been in lengthy discussions with both DJ Dan and Christopher Lawrence following our discovery of voting irregularities. They accept that there were irregularities in respect to their names. We fully accept their explanations that they, personally, had no involvement in any cheating.

In a statement, DJ Dan said: “I am happy that DJmag has cleared me, personally, of any wrongdoing relating to voting irregularities in the Top 100 poll. I fully cooperated with DJmag’s investigation. I did not cheat or encourage anyone else to cheat.

“After confronting my marketing manager, who denied the allegations, I arranged for DJmag to interview him. Ultimately, I fired him and will not use him again.

“I appreciate the many hours that DJmag spent investigating the allegations. I am also grateful for the amazing response from my fans. I look forward to seeing you on the dancefloor soon.”

Christopher Lawrence Cleared by DJ Magazine in Top 100 Poll

Monday, 29 October 2007
Christopher Lawrence - Not Guilty in DJ Mag Poll Scandal

Christopher Lawrence and his team are pleased to announce that Christopher has been cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to the Top 100 poll.

Following the discovery of voting anomalies in this years poll, DJ Mag conducted an in depth investigation, which ultimately cleared Christopher of any involvement.

Publisher James Robertson says "DJ Mag has been in lengthy discussions with Christopher Lawrence following our discovery of voting irregularities" he stated. "We fully accept his explanation that he, personally, had no involvement in any cheating".

In an interview with Skrufff, Christopher Lawrence explained "Apparently there were multiple votes from single IP addresses. DJ Mag felt it was suspicious and contacted my team to see if we knew anything about it," he continued, "We didn't, so we arranged for the marketing manager who was handling my Top 100 campaign to speak to them. He explained that he promotes the vote to street teams of 100,000- 150,000 people, mainly students".

"My team hired him because he had done campaigns like People's Choice Awards in the US as well as work for major record labels and movie studios. He said he had never had problems before, but clearly DJ Mag had a problem with his methods and the multiple votes were irregular, so we had to ask him to step aside," he continued.

"My wife was worried and considered signing me up with a wedding DJ agency, but fortunately there has been no impact whatsoever. No cancelled bookings. Nothing. So I guess I can put my Kool & the Gang records away. No weddings any time soon," Christopher joked.

Feel the 'Elite Force' at MNS and on the New Lot49 Mix CD

Elite Force

Tonight at the Monday Social in Hollywood, Elite Force is going to get weird!! Throw your Halloween costume back on and get freaky again for LA's exclusive appearance and CD release party for Lot49: Elite Force and some tech-funky tunes.

The long-awaited release of Elite Force's Lot49 mix CD is upon us this December. Often credited for being a linchpin in the developing the tech-funk genre (an amalgamation of breaks, house, techno and electro) Elite Force has been a mainstay within the scene for over 10 years. Elite Force began as a project began way back in 1996, debuting on his own newly founded Fused and Bruised label with a series of peerless 12s and remixes. After a successful five years, he put the label on the back burner to concentrate on production work, and following several years with Whole9Yards and Moonshine he became a mainstay recording artist for Adrift Recordings (formally known as Kingsize Records) before moving on to set up his own Used & Abused imprint. On the decks, Elite Force has been a prime mover since 1990 when he cut his teeth playing huge student nights and self-promoted acid house nights in the South West of England, before moving up to London and ultimately gravitating towards his tech-funk style, with which he now has a full diary of global bookings and has become known as one of the top technicians on a circuit that has included massive shows in Hungary, Australia, Italy, USA, Czech Republic, India, Turkey, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Korea and China, as well as numerous festival slots including Glastonbury and the Glade. His bi-weekly strong arm sessions web casts have become something of an intra web institution since their inception back in 2001, now routinely achieving download numbers in the tens of thousands per show.

FABRICLIVE.36 James Murphy & Pat Mahoney

Tuesday, 23 October 2007
FABRICLIVE.36 James Murphy and Pat Mahoney

James Murphy and Pat Mahoney delve into their New York roots for FABRICLIVE 36, a hot sweaty blend of seminal disco, deep rare grooves and edgy tech-infused funk from influential artists such as Donald Byrd & 125th St, Chic, Lenny Williams, Junior Byron and Love of Life Orchestra. A delightful nod to their future, past and present (including LCD Soundsystem's own "Hippe Priest Bumout"), this mix is unashamed hand-clapping fun, full of upfront rhythms, obscure treats and heart warming guilty pleasures.

“We're pretty excited. We find doing mix CDs horrifying to a certain degree because there's nobody there, so it's just like, "What are we doing?!" It's like you're just yelling into the air. We bought an old Bozak for this - the first DJ mixer ever built, hand-built. It sounds incredible. Everything sounds nicer and bigger and smoother and beautiful. The mix itself will have a little bit of stuff that isn't necessarily what we'd play in a club. But we'd like it to be fun. So we'll just do it a bunch of times live. Do it until you like it, that's actually our motto.”

Ali 'Dubfire' launches (SCI + TEK) label

Dubfire launches SCI TEK

Dubfire (aka Ali Shirazinia)-- one half of the Grammy Award winning and four-time nominated electronic music duo Deep Dish -- is pleased to announce the launch of his new digital label, Science + Technology Digital Audio [SCI + TEC]. The label will act as an exclusive outlet for Dubfire's original productions and a home for up and coming artists from around the globe.

The launch of SCI + TEC comes at a time of immense change and artistic growth for Dubfire. As heard on his recent Taipei mix compilation for Global Underground, Dubfire has shifted his attention towards a mix of darker, deeper music that first inspired him while growing up in the Washington, DC area. The crown jewel of Taipei was Dubfire's cover of Love & Rockets' "I Feel Speed," a track that featured his own vocals and perfectly showcased his constantly evolving sound. It will be released as a single in November on SCI+TEC. Cutting-edge producers Audion [Matthew Dear], Booka Shade and UNKLE have been tapped to remix the track – these mixes will be available in December.

"With Deep Dish, we are currently exploring our own creative paths. Since the music industry climate has changed, I though it was the right time to start a new digital-only label. I also needed an outlet to release my productions quickly and at a great value for the fans."

Winter Music Conference 2008 Dates Released

Thursday, 18 October 2007
Winter Music Conference, WMC 2008

WMC 2008 is set for March 25-29, at the Miami Beach Resort & Spa. Early Bird discount tickets are on sale now.

Rob Fernandez, of Pacha says “This week is like club-music heaven for the fans. It’s the only time you can hear every major dance-music act in the world at the same time, and there’s nothing else anywhere that rivals this week. Winter Music Conference helps create stars.”

I'd have to agree. It's actually cumbersome choosing where you want to go and who you want to hear. Everyones playing at the same times at great parties all across town. The good news is it's a week or so of debachry so you'll undoubtedly get your chance! Last year, WMC 2007 exceeded its expectations with more than 1,316 artists participating in 371 events across Miami during the WMC week. The program boasted more than 80 groundbreaking meetings, seminars and presentations during the week – furthering its 23rd tradition of bringing together the most innovative talent, esteemed professionals and newest technologies to chart the future advancement and growth of the industry.

DJ Mag Poll Rigged!

Thursday, 18 October 2007
DJ Dan and Christopher Lawrence disqualified from DJ Mag Poll

Christopher Lawrence, DJ Dan and The Flash Brothers and others have been disqualified from DJ Mag's controversial Top 100 DJ poll? Please say it's not true.

With 345,000 votes cast by email, publisher James Robertson has spent a ridiculous number of man-hours going through each vote. His discoveries have resulted in several DJs being disqualified from this year’s poll.

Roberston explained: “This year, I made a decision to investigate votes where the same IP address appeared over 50 times for the same person. The chances of the same person getting voted for by 50 different computers each having been allocated the same IP address within a week would be billions to one.”
